About Osborne Treatment Services
For over two decades, Osborne Treatment Services (OTS) substance use disorder treatment program has provided day treatment as an alternative to incarceration and helping men and women involved in the criminal justice system live drug free in their communities. Created in 1989 in response to the crack epidemic, El Rio continually evolves, keeping pace with new evidence-based practices. Adapting and innovating treatment options, such as marijuana-specific treatment, trauma-informed care, gender-responsive treatment and integration of family, health education, GED, vocational training and employment services allows OTS to meet the changing needs of participants.
El Rio
El Rio is a highly structured and medically supervised substance abuse treatment program licensed by the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). The program operates with unique sensitivity to the needs of people dealing with the complex issues of substance abuse and involvement with the criminal justice system. At El Rio we offer alternatives to incarceration or re-incarceration for individuals charged with drug-related crimes or on probation or parole, and mandated to treatment by the courts or community corrections agencies.
El Rio's treatment goals for participants are to:
1| Obtain and maintain abstinence
2| Develop an understanding of drug dependence/abuse
3| Develop skills in avoiding relapse
4| Develop skills to avoid high-risk behaviors
5| Re-establish/strengthen family relationships
6| Improve educational/vocational status
7| Improve accountability for behaviors and outcomes
8| Avoid re-arrest

What Osborne Can Offer
Osborne Treatment Services uses various methods and approaches to guide participants through the cognitive behavioral changes and the practical steps needed to empower participants to achieve self-sufficiency, adopt healthy lifestyles, enter the workforce, and rejoin families and communities.
Each program component has been developed and implemented with the goal to treat individuals by focusing on their strengths and assets, and not their crimes and deficits. A combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing provides opportunities for participants to build on their strengths and discard behavior that no longer meets their needs. Participants meet with counselors for individual counseling, group therapy, peer support group, educational workshops, and participate in various exercises including lecturing, discussion, role playing, and journal writing. We now offer a Spanish track for Spanish-speaking participants as well.
Healthy recreation is an important component of recovery. As such, we integrate musical performances, holiday events and recreational activities, such as ping-pong, chess, pool and air hockey tables, and informal mentoring. All participants participate in a communal lunch served daily in Osborne's cafeteria, adjacent to the recreational area. Breakfast is also served to participants.
